What is Part time PhD?

If you are working in any educational institutions or Govt. approved industries or companies or organizations, you can register for Ph.D as part time student.

Part time scholar will be in his work place and do the research work by visiting the college / university in specified times. However, he has to attend certain number of classes and evaluation to complete the course work. Besides, he should have work experience in the same field of his research and the number of years of experience specified will vary with the college or university. He should obtain NOC for his higher study from the organization he is working.

Part time course is normally for 4years but it may take from 6 to 8 years to get doctorate depending on the college and course of choice. Obviously it is going to take more time when compared with full time.

Though part-time PhD would take twice the time to complete the programmed, it will also give you a few advantages such as after graduation, you will not only have a PhD diploma, but you would have also added a few years of work experience to your resume.

Yet a scholar doing a PhD. on a full-time basis stands a high chance of having more time to concentrate on their research work as they spend more time within the university and therefore the necessary resources are readily available.

According to the UGC’s March’17 notification, PhDs granted through distance education aren’t recognized. Only those attending full-time or part-time courses will be eligible for recognized degrees, especially during the appointment of academic staff in universities
